The Founding of Burton Concert Band
Burton upon Trent and the surrounding areas have a long, continuing history of Brass Bands. In the 1980s and 1990s, strong education policies for woodwind teaching created the need for mixed groups with Woodwind and Brass instruments. This trend across the UK saw a rise in the number of Concert Bands.
To fill the opportunity in Burton on Trent, David Haines (retired Musical Director of the band), held a 1993 meeting of local woodwind, brass and percussion players. As a result of that meeting, the Burton Concert Band was formed. A number of the founding members still join us regularly as guests or as regular playing members of the band.
October 2023 saw our 30th Anniversary celebration – a show-stopping performance at the Repton School Beldam Hall, entitled “Finale.” At this concert, David Haines retired as Musical Director of the band and introduced those in attendance to Ed Temple.
Outside of regular concerts, the band has historical successes in national competitions including a gold medal performance at the Boosey & Hawkes Wind Band Finals.
The band enjoy regular and varied social events and concert tours domestically and abroad. The band have recently returned from a successful tour of Dorset in July 2024!
