History of Burton Concert Band
Burton upon Trent and the surrounding areas have a long history of Brass Bands, which continues to this day. In the late 20th Century, strong Local Education Authority policies in Woodwind tuition created the need for mixed Woodwind and Brass groups and a rise in the number of Concert Bands in the UK.
In order to fill this gap in Burton on Trent, David Haines (retired Musical Director of the band), held a meeting in 1993 of local woodwind, brass and percussion players. As a result of that meeting, the Burton Concert Band was formed. Some of the founding members still perform with us regularly.
October 2023 saw our 30th Anniversary celebration in a show-stopping performance at the Repton School Beldam Hall, entitled “finale.” Following this concert, David Haines retired as Musical Director of the band and introduced those in attendance to Ed Temple.
Outside of regular concerts, the band has historical successes in national competitions, winning a gold medal in the Boosey and Hawkes Wind Band Finals as well as a multiple overseas concert tours.
Social events are a regular part of the Band calendar and we invite guest conductors from time-to-time to train the Band and supply new repertoire.
